Having a swimming pool in your backyard is guaranteed to give you and the family many years of enjoyment.
However, even though a backyard pool can be fun, it can also be very dangerous, especially if you have children around. Some wait to install a pool in their home until the children are older or can swim, however even with younger children there are steps you can take to ensure all is safe and that you can have peace of mind.
Of course the easiest and first thing to remember is that you should never, ever, allow your children to be alone near your pool. Unfortunately yes, children tend to be drawn to water, and all it takes is a second for them to end up falling into the pool. If you need to leave the pool area - even for a second or two - you should always take your children with you. Literally a second is all it takes for a tragedy to strike. Don't be overconfident with the kids, in our experience - believe us - it isn't worth it.
To be on the safe side, you should always make sure that you have plenty of safety equipment around your pool at all times. Safety equipment
is great to have around, as they absolutely can save the life of a child or anyone else who can't swim. You should also invest in something like a shepherd's hook as well, as you can use it to pull someone out of the water.
If you don't currently have a fence around your backyard swimming pool
you should look into getting one. Without a doubt a fence is a great way to protect your pool from children. If you have a protective fence installed, you won't have to worry about little kids falling in while you are away from the pool. If you are installing a home pool fence, you should always make sure that it's at least 6 foot high, with a locking gate or a high mounted latch. This way, no one can get into the pool without the key or being adult sized…
If you have a backyard pool we wholeheartedly recommend that you learn CPR as well. We hope you never ever have to use it, however it's great to know in the event that someone falls into your pool that is unable to swim.
